Hello,

Since today is such a rainy day, I thought it would be fun to have a fort challenge! If you've already built one, and taken a photo, send it my way! If not, create one in your house out of any materials that you have (blankets, straw connectors, etc.). I'll tweet out your forts to share with our St Gabriel community :) Here is Diego's fort for some inspiration:

Have a wonderful day,

Hi everyone,

I really enjoyed seeing those who joined our class call this morning! In case you missed it, we started our new book "A Boy Called Bat." We learned that Bat's mom is a veterinarian and she brought home a special surprise from her office....a baby skunk! We then proceeded to look at pictures of baby skunks and they are pretty cute!

No wonder Bat wants to try to convince his mom to let her keep it! We'll have to find out whether Bat can convince her, or whether he decides that the baby skunk should be raised to be released back into the wild. Join us next Wednesday to find out what happens next :)

Have a wonderful day!

Good morning everyone,

How beautiful was it outside on Saturday? I hope you all had a nice weekend and that you feel ready to go for another week of learning online together. As always, we will have a Google Hangout this Wednesday at 11am. The invitation was sent out a couple weeks ago, so look for it in your emails.

I have posted half of a math unit on Time in Hapara. We will continue learning about telling time next week as well. In your Language folder, I have uploaded 3 sheets for you to work on. They didn't get saved in the order that they should be done in, so make sure to follow this order:

1. What is a myth?

2. Daedalus and Icarus

3. King Midas and the Golden Touch

As always, let me know if you have any questions or any issues opening up the files.

Take care,

Mrs. Zani

Happy Earth Day everyone!

I'm happy to see that the sun is shining today (even though it is super cold)! Don't forget to send me pictures of you wearing green and/or an Earth Day chalk message for me to tweet out :)

Here are some photos of a very quiet downtown Ottawa on Monday. This was after 4pm, when the streets are usually packed with cars during rush hour.

The parliament building lawn is under construction right now.

Can you spot the new copper roof they've put on the building?

The War Memorial. Can you spot the rainbow in the window of the National Art Centre (where plays and musicals are performed)?

No water in the canal and you can see the bridge to Quebec in the background!

The Byward Market. Usually this side of the street is filled with fruit and vegetable stands. None to see right now.

The Mackenzie King Bridge in front of the Rideau Centre (the mall). Usually jam-packed with buses, I didn't see one the whole time I walked down this street!

Anyone go skating on the canal this past winter? To the right, you can see the edge of the Ottawa City Hall.

Downtown Ottawa is usually very busy, so it was strange walking around and seeing it so quiet. I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Hello everyone,

I hope you got the chance to enjoy the beautiful sunshine yesterday! I took some photos of my walk to Parliament Hill, which I'll share with you tomorrow :)

I sent out a Google Hangout invitation for 11am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning for us to finish our book "Restart." Check your emails because it got sent out last week!

Kelly Yang did a question and answer session on Youtube yesterday :) She also read a sneak preview of her next book "Three Keys" (the sequel to Front Desk). You can skip ahead to 26:30 for the part she reads, or watch from the beginning to hear her talk about "Front Desk" and writing "Three Keys."

Good morning everyone,

I hope you had a restful and relaxing weekend with your family! This week, we will be honouring Earth Day by having our very own Grade 4 Spirit week. This will include things to do, write, and wear. When you have completed your activity, take a picture and email it to me. I will be tweeting them out to share with our St. Gabriel community.

Monday- Check for power cords that don't have phones, laptops, or tablets plugged into them. Remove them from the outlet to save electricity :)

Tuesday-Complete the Earth Day A-Z sheet. Take a picture, send it to me!

Wednesday (Earth Day)- 1) Wear green (thanks for the idea Aidan and Chelsea!)
2) Write an Earth Day message in chalk for your neighbours to see (if it's raining, do this tomorrow instead).

Thursday-Be the light monitor in your house. If the lights are on, and there is no one in the room, turn them off :)

Friday-Choose one of the ideas that you came up with for the "Earth Day Ideas" sheet last week. Use Kiddle to do research and write about why it is good for the environment and how you could encourage people to do it, ex. Why is planting your own vegetable garden good for the environment? Send me a picture,  Google Doc, or Google Slide when done.

Look in your Language folder in Hapara to find the "Earth Day A-Z sheet for Tuesday. I have also uploaded a new math unit in Hapara called "Adding and Subtracting Decimals." As always, let me know if you are missing anything and I will email it to you.

Take care,

Mrs. Zani

Hello everyone,

As always. it was nice seeing your faces and hearing your voices this morning! I look forward to our weekly Google Hangouts :)

Next week, on April 22nd, it is Earth Day. This will look a little different than when we celebrate it at school, but I wanted us to learn more about it and do some activities around it next week.

Here is a link to read about how Earth day started and some questions are in the second link. If you click "file" at the top of the page, you can see the option "make a copy." Click on that and you will have your own copy that you can type your answers into, or you can choose to print it out and answer it at home.

Good morning everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend with your families!

I have posted a new Hapara math folder for this week. It is called "Comparing Decimals." If anything appears to be missing, or not working, let me know and I can send you the work in a Google Doc.

I will be posting a language activity for you to do tomorrow here on the blog, so keep an eye out for that!

We will also have another Google Hangout tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at 11:00am to continue reading our book "Restart" together. I will read another two chapters from it. If you missed last week, don't worry, we can fill you in on what happened :)

Hello everyone,

I hope that the start to our new phase of online learning is going well for you. Please reach out to me if you are having any issues with Hapara. I have been doing Google Hangouts to help people navigate the website if needed. Let me know if you would like to set one up!

Just a reminder that we will have our Google Hangout to read our book "Restart" together at 11:00AM. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you again :)

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend with your families :) For our first official week of online learning, I have decided to focus solely on math. I have posted a math workspace in everyone's Hapara folder. If you have not used Hapara from home before, here are the instructions to access it:

1) Go to the JK-6 Student Portal on the OCSB website.
2) Sign into your student account using the email and password that you use to sign into the chromebooks at school.
3) Open up your math folder and the unit titled "Decimals" will be in there for you to click on.
4) This file is divided into 4 lessons. Each lesson contains a Learning Goals column, a Lesson column, a Work column, and a Game column.
5) Please make sure to submit your work to me in the work column.

If you have any issues accessing the work, or if any of the files are giving you problems, feel free to reach out to me and I will help from afar.

Tuesday Morning,  Starting at 10:30am, I will be available to offer help on Google Hangouts for anyone who needs help with any of the math work. Take a look through the work today and sign up for a timeslot on this Google Spreadsheet only if necessary:

I will grant you access to the spreadsheet, upon request.

Wednesday morning, at 11am, I will be hosting another Google Hangout for those who are interested in hearing me read two chapters from the book that we have been reading together as a class. I'll be sending the invites out via the student email. Please only join our chats through the student email account.

As always, reach out to me if you would like more information about anything at all!

Takes care,

Mrs. Zani

Friday, April 3, 2020

Hello everyone,

It was so nice to see most of your smiling faces this afternoon! If we couldn't see you, it was nice to hear from you :) I will be spending this weekend planning for next week and figuring out what our next step of online learning is going to look like.

On Monday morning, I will post what my math and language expectations are for the week. The plan is for you to have 5 hours of work total for the week. You can choose to plan your days however you would like...whether you get it all done at once, or do an hour a day, it is up to you. If you are looking for extra tasks to do, like some of the fun writing ones from this week, let me know and I can send them to you individually :)

Someone also had said during the Google Hangout that I should've brought the read-aloud home with me. Which I did :) So I am planning on setting up a Google Hangout one day next week to read a couple chapters to those who are interested in finding out what happens next :)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families and we will chat more next week!

Hello,

I hope you've gotten the chance to enjoy some of the beautiful sunshine today! I am really looking forward to our Google Hangout tomorrow! I've been getting some invitation acceptances and am getting more excited with each one!

Today, I had my first virtual physio appointment for my ankle! I wasn't sure how it would work, but it went well and I am able to keep working on exercises to get my ankle back to normal :)

I don't have a task to assign to you for tomorrow, but I'm hoping to see most of you on the Google Hangout at 3pm!

Take care,

Mrs. Zani

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Hello everyone,

I wanted to start out by letting you know that this Friday, at 3pm I will be hosting a Google Hangout Meet. I have sent the link to join the Hangout to your student email. Let me know if you have not received it. We will be able to talk through video. I wanted to use this to see how you are all doing and to test it out for more use next week as we move forward with online learning together. It will also be nice to see all of your faces :) You can also join without the webcam setting and still talk to us if your parents are more comfortable with that.

Your task for tomorrow comes from a wonderful idea that Mr. Graitson and Ms. Juneau had for their students to try at home: "Hide a small object inside or outside of your house and draw a detailed treasure map. Have someone at home use the map to locate your hidden item! Bonus points for including angles, measurements, a legend, riddles/clues and epic illustrations. Get Creative!" Send me a picture of your map and let me know how it went!

Miss you all!

Mrs. Zani
